Basic poker strategies

In this page we will try to give some basic poker strategies that will help build up your bankroll. We will go through some of the major and yet very simple factors to consider when reaching the table. This page is dedicated to Texas Holdem tips but please feel free to contact us for assistance with other poker variations. We will try to offer many new resources for you tl learn Poker Strategie. (German site)

1) Position
A very important factor that should have a major impact on the way you should play a certain hand. Specifics can be found on our positions page but the general rule of thumb is to play stronger from a late position such as dealer and be much more tight from an early position.

2) Starting Hands
By far one of the most fundamental aspects of Texas Holdem poker is to know which starting hands to play and when. The tips mentioned here are mainly for low limit tables, No limits tables are more prone to changes.
The hands that you would like to raise the pot with would definitely be :
AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AQs, TT, in tight tables maybe also AJs.
Hands that are worth calling at least to the flop are :
AJs,KQs,QJs JTs,T9s, 99,88,77,66 and any suited Ace cards.

3) Player type
It is imperative to try and understand which type of table we are playing at.
Could be a loose table, in which players make wild bets without thinking to much, hoping to catch a good river. On other hand we could be at a tight table , in which players stick to good starting hands and fold "longshots" easily.
General tips would be to try and refrain from bluffing and playing too aggressively at loose table, reserving this game style to tight tables would be a better bet.
Furthermore tight tables offer a set of rules of there own, aggressive play is not usually rewarded as many moves don’t get called, if they do its usually by a player holding a very strong hand.
Try to read your opponents game style, see who you are up against, it will help you squeeze the bucks from the right people.

4) Simple play
Lets face it, beginners are not good players. And as such there is a set of pretty straightforward guide lines of how to take small players money. Small players ( at the $0.5-1 and $1-2 tables) don’t really know whats going on around them ,they are very focused on their hand and tend to get very excited when they hit a pair or any other small hand. Use this fact , don’t bet big or play fancy with them, squeeze the money slowly and gently out of their hands, It may not be glamorous but it definitely works. Bluffs are unnecessary, as in most cases they wont be called (small players are usually very tight) or maybe called by somebody that will end up catching a shotgun and getting you tilted.

5) Dont Tilt
Tilt is by far one of the biggest enemies of any poker player , novice or pro. Loosing a sure hand when some crazy loose player catches the nuts on the river for no apparent reason could drive you into tilt.
Was it tilt? Well, its when you play with your emotions and not your mind, making bad bets, jumping into decisions and more very negative effects. Our suggestion, lost a big hand? Take a break , get up , go and get something cold to drink and clear your thoughts. More than that , reached your lower limit for today , go do something else , there is a whole world out there! :)

5) Avoid beginner mistakes
Here are some pretty trivial but common mistakes to avoid.
1) Not all suited hands are good, the chances of catching a flush on the flop is roughly 12%, focus on strong hands like AQ and QQ rather than on low suited hands.
2) Limit your bankroll, play at the small tables in the beginning and don’t jump into games you can afford.
3) Try to analyze you game by keeping track of it , you can also use pot odd tables next to you. They are very useful.
4) Don’t risk or gamble, poker is not gambling . Hands are won by , knowledge of the game, discipline combined with some math and just a tad luck. Before going into a hand calculate what you have, what your opponent can have and what both of you will possibly have in the next round of the game.
